In the early 1990s, I was practicing psychiatry as a solo private practitioner. As I interacted with my patients, I became increasingly aware of the rather thoughtless manner that I lived some aspects of my life. So I sat at my electronic typewriter and banged out a few first drafts of some chapters in this book. After retiring in 1995 and moving into a retirement community, I was challenged to write my life story. My efforts resulted in the 2001 publication of My Alaska Years, describing my nineteen years as a medical missionary in the North Country. That was followed, in early 2003, by an autobiography of the subsequent twenty-five years, The Making of a Christian Psychiatrist. Then came the resurrection of those early efforts, followed by rewriting and expanding to include the contents of this volume. In a way, it too is autobiographical: I express my experiences and opinions with what I trust is a God-honoring, biblical basis for a workable answer to each chapter’s question.
