Saint Lawrence was a deacon martyred in 258. He was put to death roasted on a gridiron which he accepted with patience and heroic courage, even joking with his tormentors: “I’m done on this side, turn me over.”

Saint Lawrence is the patron of cooks, the poor, and comedians.
