May 1865, the owner of the Riverbend is dead the heir in Europe, the slaves gone except an older couple and their daughter who refused to leave the home they knew and the Hatcher orphans. Samantha, oldest of the orphans sitting in an upstairs window-seat at night sees a horse with a body slumped across the neck. Running to the veranda she finds a wounded Yankee.
