Leon Chandler can’t understand why his big brother Derrick is so perfect, or why Nana bakes a special sweet potato pie just for him. Leon’s grandparents are proud of Derrick, and Leon wants to be noticed too. However, he sees only one way to get his share of the attention. He’s determined to become the best joke telling kid in the whole fifth grade. Unfortunately, the one thing he doesn’t want anyone to find out about is his love for writing poetry.

Leon meets a new student named Autumn. And Autumn has a secret of her own. The joking gets out of hand and soon Leon begins to understand how using his gift can help his new friend.
