Scientist Diana Taylor’s orderly life becomes wonderfully complicated when she begins a friendship with a seven year old boy and his dog.

Diana Marie Taylor has an orderly life that is just how she likes it. A perfectly furnished luxury apartment, a satisfying career as a scientist, and a simple lifestyle. But all of that changes when she meets Jonah Scott Morgan. Jonah is seven years old. His father is out of the picture. His mother is sick, and the most love he gets comes from his dog.

On a rainy evening Diana catches Jonah digging food out that she just tossed in the trash. She takes him for a decent meal and learns that the boy and his mother have fallen through the cracks, living off the government’s radar and in desperate need of help. Diana has never trusted social services, so when Jonah’s mother dies, she decides to take care of the boy, and his dog, herself. The decision changes her life, particularly when she takes the dog to veterinarian Garrett Larson, a single man who specializes in studying animal behavior. His work has given him the ability to recognize feelings people have that they cannot express, and he sees the pain Diana and Jonah both hide from the world and from each other.
