The book traces the history of Christian moral and theological thought on wealth and profit-seeking from its pre-Christian Greco-Roman roots through the Reformation. A gradual shift from a pessimistic to a favorable attitude or stance is shown to have occurred centuries before Weber’s Protestant ethic, beginning at the time of the Commercial Revolution.
