In 2044, a spacecraft christened Aegean C suffers catastrophic damage as it exits Earth’s atmosphere with nearly 2,000 people aboard. The skill of the crew keeps the craft intact until it crash lands in a mountain range, not far from the equator. In the days that follow, the people of the Aegean C realize that they are not on the same Earth they left. They’ve either catapulted through time or come to a different planet altogether. In the months and years that follow, they realize that no one is coming to rescue them and they must make a life in a world that is as wild and dangerous as it is bountiful.

The story leaps forward to the descendants of the survivors five generations later, when the ways and means of life are a mix of old-world tech and secret recipes.

Society is mired in a caste system with a select few who inherit wealth and power while others hoard the knowledge of any useful skill or trade in order to keep from slipping further down in the system.
