THE BIBLE IS FULL OF STORIES OF PERSONAL FAILURE. It is full of stories of people who committed murder, committed adultery, engaged in acts of prostitution, lacked faith in God, doubted that God would give provision as He had promised, committed fraud against loved ones, cheated the public out of tax money, engaged in other acts of corruption, lived lives ruled by fleshly desires, disobeyed God’s direct commands, persecuted and killed believers, and denied Christ for purposes of self-preservation. What a mess! There isn’t a single sin, failure, or shortcoming known to man which isn’t catalogued somewhere in the Bible. There isn’t a single sin, failure, or shortcoming known to man that wasn’t committed by one of the heroes of the faith. So then should we admire these imperfect, sin-stained people? Yes. Because they weren’t just failures. They also were great successes. One of the great truths of the Bible is that every hero of the faith was an imperfect human being, full of doubts, worries, fears, and spiritual shortcomings. After all, they were only human.
