Mod isn’t like “normal” teenagers. She is numbered among what people call the Superhumans. Genetic scientists changed Superhumans so that they were stronger, smarter, and more efficient than “ordinary” people. Most people, however, call them “Others” and wish they had stayed in the strict institutions where they were imprisoned for fourteen years. Now that she is free, all Mod wants to do is fit into this new world and make friends. The new world isn’t so friendly, though, and when she does find a friend in Lisa, who is also poorly treated by her peers, Lisa’s mother threatens to break their friendship. Having been brought up in an institution in which feelings and emotions were not taught, Mod is not used to being hurt. Therefore, when Lisa’s mother prohibits Lisa from seeing Mod again, it is not only her friendship with Lisa that is threatened, it is Mod’s life.
