This ultimate trial came suddenly on January 3, 1999. In fifty-degree water, six men clung to the sunken outrigger canoe for five hours, while high winds and waves beat them to exhaustion in the Channel Island area of the Pacific Ocean. Tino’s story was documented on the Discovery TV special on hypothermia titled Survival. Two men died in this tragedy at sea.
