Christians as well as non-Christians struggle with maintaining peace and unity. What are the causes of division within the Body of Christ? Why can’t we just accept each other the way we are? The very culture we live in is antichrist – with its worship of money and technology – its senseless murders, rapes, kidnapping, illicit sex, thefts, and other extraordinary cruel crimes. And, if all this external opposition to the Church of Jesus Christ were not enough, Christians themselves ambush each other within the Church!

The Barna Research Group says that 20% of church-goers change their church in a typical year. 15% – 20% of church-goers attend more than one church on a rotating basis. Barna also notes, “Study after study emphasizes that we make assumptions about people’s spiritual understanding that are unjustified. The American Church desperately needs a back-to-basics movement to fill in the cracks in our spiritual understanding.”

Despite the fact that pastors say evangelism and outreach rank as the top priorities of their churches, the proportion of both non-Christians and unchurched adults have remained unchanged since 2000. “In fact, because the population has increased, the number of unchurched and non-Christian people in the nation has actually grown.” We are losing the battle for souls in America.

Unsuspecting, unprepared Christians, who should be making disciples, are licking their wounds and wandering around looking for their perception of a real “New Testament” home church – only to be disillusioned again and again! When will the Body of Christ realize its influence is being progressively weakened from within by friendly fire? When will the spiritual “wheat” stop being contaminated by the “tares” sown by the enemy of our souls? Church leaders and members seem unable or unwilling to deal with sins of the flesh either in other church members or in themselves. These sins give rise to broken relationships among church members and relocation of Christians to other churches (i.e. “shifting saints”).
